Meet Patrick Shearn: Creative Director at Poetic Kinetics

We had the good fortune of connecting with Patrick Shearn and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Patrick, do you have any habits that you feel contribute to your effectiveness?
Stemming from many experiences in my upbringing and youth, I have found that saying yes to opportunities has been a fundamental force in my growth and success. I had amazing familial encouragement combined with many unusual opportunities. I had a safety net that allowed me to lean out into the winds of possibility, so I did, with a sense of confidence and trust. Physically, I learned what a human is capable of in terms of strength, endurance, and comfort. Later, challenges that seemed daunting were not that cold, that hard, or that steep. I often found myself being offered positions of responsibility far beyond what my age or experience level might have warranted. Knowing no better, I said yes, and took what was presented as normal. I often choose the new experiences or adventures to be had over money or security. Through this evolving process, I learned a wide variety of skills that, while wildly disparate, would later strongly enhance my problem-solving ability and creative ingenuity. I often find myself combining memories from various situations in the past to create new creative solutions within my art practice. This has given me confidence in my problem-solving ability. Even in situations where I do not completely see the path to success, I trust my instincts, and the team I surround myself with, to figure it out. The more these opportunities present themselves, the stronger this capability becomes. I have learned to embrace these moments and say yes whenever I can.

On the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, a huge art installation hovers over Berlin, Visions in Motion. It consists of the people’s wishes, hopes and thoughts about the end of the division of Germany.

30,000 of the flutter tapes are labeled with messages – people from all over the world were able to formulate their feelings, opinions, wishes, hopes for the division of Germany within Germany. In the week in which the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall is celebrated in the capital, her thoughts now float over Berlin.

It took six months to get the messages to the kinetic Skynet, which is now blowing across the Strait of June 17th. A kinetic Skynet is made of ultra-light material that reproduces the natural movements of the wind. The art installation was the brainchild of Los Angeles-based artist Patrick Shearn. He has already installed similar kinetic sculptures in various places around the world. According to Monopol magazine , the swarming behavior of fish and birds inspired him to create the gently rustling installation.

With his art, Shearn wants to stimulate thought, as he told Tagesspiegel : “If we all knew each other better, then we wouldn’t cause each other so much suffering.” The Visions in Motion project aims to address the different opinions, wishes and hopes of Make people visible. The installation will be hanging on Strasse des 17. Juni until November 10th. In the anniversary week of the fall of the Berlin Wall, more than a hundred events will take place at seven original locations of the Peaceful Revolution.

Berlin commemorates the fall of the wall

A huge stage had been set up in front of the Brandenburg Gate for days. In the evening, a show took place here in which the artist and guests had one thing in common: a close connection between their art or life story with the fall of the Berlin Wall 30 years ago and the subsequent reunification of the two German states. The 150-meter-long art installation “Visions in Motion” with its 100,000 colorful strips of fabric fluttered above the audience on the festival mile.

Patrick Shearn of Poetic Kinetics brings Visions in Motion to the 30th Anniversary of the Fall of the Berlin Wall

Numerous visitors had already seen the open-air exhibition on the history of the Peaceful Revolution and the fall of the Wall right next to the Brandenburg Gate or the art installation Visions in Motion.

Around 30,000 different colored ribbons, on which Berliners wrote their wishes and hopes in 140 characters, moved like a large flag over a length of 150 meters above the nearby Straße des 17. Juni. Since the beginning of darkness, the art installation was colorfully illuminated, as on the previous days.

Messages of peace mark 30 years since fall of Berlin Wall

BERLIN (AP) — Workers have hoisted a rainbow-colored net of 100,000 streamers — many with messages of love and peace — in front of Berlin’s iconic Brandenburg Gate as part of next week’s commemoration of the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall.

The installation, called “Visions in Motion,” is the work of Los Angeles artist Patrick Shearn, who has created similar moving sculptures elsewhere in the world.

Shearn told The Associated Press on Friday that he wanted to convey the sense of a dynamic world by stringing 20,000 square feet of ripstop nylon sailcloth that moves with the wind. He hoped it would reflect the widespread desire for peace.

Among the 30,000 handwritten notes were messages such as “Love wins,” ”Revolution” and “I hope the wall in (people’s) heads disappears too.”

BERLIN (AP) — Police and organizers say more than 100,000 people took part in an open-air party celebrating the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall.

Despite the cold and damp, crowds flocked to Berlin’s Brandenburg Gate late Saturday for music and fireworks.

The boulevard leading up to the Brandenburg Gate was covered with a giant rainbow-colored net made of 100,000 streamers, many with messages of love and peace, created by American artist Patrick Shearn.
